A winch is a tool made of steel that can move a load both horizontally and vertically. The load is connected to the winch by a steel cable or a synthetic rope. There are 4 major differences between a hand winch and an electric winch. The power source, the speed, the weight and the price.

• Power source – An electric winch is driven by an electric motor and a hand winch by muscle power.

• Speed – The average speed of a hand winch is about 0.4 m/min. An electric winch has an average speed of 5 m/min. The electric one is therefore about 10 times faster.

• Weight – The weight of the electric winch is on average 4 times heavier. This decreases as the lifting capacity increases.

• Price – The price of an electric winch is on average 6 times higher than a hand winch. Average difference is €3500 per winch
