Tidal flat valves on the river Thames

Winches at Horseshoe Corner on the River Thames operate vital tidal flat valves, preventing upstream tidal flow. Annual maintenance is facilitated by Gebuwin Marine winches, with recent upgrades enhancing durability and performance.

Tidal flat valves on the river Thames

At the Horseshoe Corner location on the River Thames, winches are deployed for the operation of the tidal flat valves, which are utilized to open the valves when necessary.

These flap valves are deployed in pairs to prevent tidal water from flowing upstream into the river during regular conditions or flooding. The valves are automated to ensure precise control of the tidal level.

Constructed from stainless steel, the tidal flap valves feature a latching mechanism. Regular annual inspections and maintenance are essential, for which a chain is connected to the end of the rope. The rope exits through the back/mounting plate, runs through the stand, and extends down to the river, where it is manually operated for valve maintenance.

Two Gebuwin Marine winches, with a lifting capacity of 5000 kg and crafted entirely from stainless steel 316, are used for this task. To ensure smooth winding of the cable onto the drum, grooves are machined into the drum, and a pressure roller is installed to maintain tension on the wire rope and guide it into the grooves. To properly guide the cable to the valves, our stainless steel pulley blocks are used.

An older model Gebuwin winch, as can be seen in the provided picture, was initially utilized but has succumbed to rust. Now, the latest model stainless steel winches are installed, featuring sealed housings and crafted entirely from stainless steel 316, thereby extending their lifespan.
