Winches for explosive areas – ATEX
In various industries, Gebuwin winches are used, sometimes needing to operate in potentially explosive environments. It is crucial to use equipment that complies with ATEX certification (ATmosphères EXplosibles), a European directive for the safety of equipment used in explosive atmospheres.
All manual and electric winches from Gebuwin are available with ATEX certification for zones 2 and 22. Below, we delve deeper into the specific coding for the manual winches:
The codings have the following meanings:
- CE marking in accordance with the European Machinery Directive.
- Ex marking for explosion safety.
- Group II for use in all environments (industrial use) except mining.
- Category 3, indicating the protection level and suitability for:
- G (gas environments)
- D (dust environments)
Followed by ‘Ex’ (explosion-proof).
- Suitable for:
- II (Gas Group II)
- III (Dust Group III)
Our marine (MR) winches have a higher ignition energy (IIB) in the gas group than our worm gear and spur gear (WW/TL) winches (IIC).
The ignition energy for the dust group is the same for all types of winches, namely IIIC.
- Temperature class for:
- T4 (temperature <135 ºC), T135ºC (temperature <135 ºC)
- T3 (temperature <200 ºC), T200ºC (temperature <200 ºC)
Our worm gear and marine (WW/MR) winches have a T4 marking. Our spur gear (TL) winches have a T3 marking.
- Equipment Protection Level:
- Gc (gas) or Dc (dust)
- Ambient temperature for operation between -20ºC and 70ºC.
This coding is established in accordance with the 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114) standard.
Our manual winches can also be used with a pneumatic motor AM5000, which is also ATEX certified. If you are not familiar with the requirements for ATEX certification, let us advise you. Contact us for more information.

Liquid offloading
MariFlex is one off the leading companies in liquid offloading services and equipment. The ships and or area’s where the winches are uses is an ATEX zone 2 zone. Mariflex uses Gebuwins winches for their tripods. The MariFlex Tripod is a hoisting device designed to handle portable pumps, cargo and hydraulic hoses during an overtop off-loading. The tripod is a compact and sturdy and has a safe working load of 500 kg.
Lifting flare system
Flare systems are essential for safety on oil and gas extraction sites because they help prevent toxic gases from entering the atmosphere. These systems burn the gases before they are released, which is not only safer for workers but also better for the environment.
One of the essential components of a flare system is the combustion chamber, and a pipe through which the combustion gases are discharged. To prevent the open flame from reaching the ground and to reduce the effects of heat, smoke, and noise, the system is often placed in an elevated position. However, lifting the flare system to the desired height can be challenging because of its weight and size. A worm gear hand winch 3 ton is used.
Maritime gangway
In the world of maritime operations, safety and efficiency are paramount. For our client, these principles needed to be upheld in the operation of a gangway – a critical passageway facilitating boarding, disembarking and maintenance activities on their vessels. The challenge? A winch resistant to seawater corrosion and ATEX zone 2 certified. Gebuwin provided the solution with our stainless steel worm gear hand winch.
