How does an electric winch work?
A winch consists of a motor, a drum, a cable, the brake, the housing and the controls.
The motor
The motor and the gearbox provide the required power and the desired speed. The motor is the source of power and the gearbox provides the required transmission.
There are many different engines available. Gebuwin uses the following 3 in most cases:
- 230V – 1 phase: this is your normal plug that you can find at home.
- 230V – 3 phase: This is not common in the Netherlands, but it is in Scandinavian countries.
- 400V – 3 phase: this is the most common and most powerful (voltage is 380-415)
Other voltages are possible on request.
The drum
The drum is a tube with a flange on both sides. The cable is fixed to the drum with a clamp. The drum is positioned in the winch with a shaft that is fixed in the frame (housing) of the winch.
The drum ensures that the cable is stored neatly. The amount of cable that can be stored on the drum depends on the height of the flanges, the length and diameter of the drum and the diameter of the cable used.
The cable
The thickness of the cable is determined by the maximum lifting capacity of the winch.
After all, the cable must be strong enough to hold the load.
Cables used on winches must always have a safety factor (SF) of 3 (according to EN13157 standard).
The brake
The brake of the electric winch is in the motor. As soon as you release the button from the operating spear, the load remains in position.
The frame
The housing is a metal construction that is placed around all components. As well as keeping all the components together, the housing also protects these components from the weather and from use by people.
Of course, various finishes are possible for electric winches, such as multiple layers of paint (C3M, C5M) or in full stainless steel. However, the winch must be well protected against weather conditions such as salt water.
The control
There are many different ways to operate a winch. In most cases, a control box as shown here is used.
It is also possible to mount a control box on the wall or use a radio graphic control.
Of course, every control has a raise and lower button.
Most common options:
- Emergency button (as shown here).
- Two speed: you can press the button in two positions in this case.
- Variable speed: here is an extra button on the control to increase the speed evenly.
