Can't quite figure it out?
How to choose the right hand winch
The correct hand winch depends on the load, the required lifting or pulling distance, the operating environment and how frequently the winch will be used. Always start by determining the maximum load and whether the application involves lifting, pulling, positioning or tensioning.
Important selection criteria include:
- Maximum lifting or pulling capacity
- Required rope length and drum capacity
- Lifting or pulling speed
- Frequency of operation
- Indoor, outdoor, marine or corrosive environment
- Wall, floor or machinery mounting
- Required options, such as a grooved drum, free-spooling drum or multiple drum compartments
Need help finding a suitable model? Use the hand winch configurator or contact Gebuwin with your load, required travel distance and application.
Spur gear or worm gear hand winch?
Gebuwin manufactures both spur gear and worm gear hand winches. Each transmission has different advantages.
Spur gear hand winches
Spur gear winches are designed for efficient operation and relatively high rope speeds. They are suitable for many general lifting and pulling applications and are available in capacities from compact, lightweight models to industrial winches for heavier loads.
Choose a spur gear hand winch when operating speed, compact dimensions and efficient manual operation are important.
Worm gear hand winches
Worm gear hand winches provide controlled movement and are particularly suitable for applications where safety, stability and a large rope capacity are required. They can be installed in different mounting positions and are available for light as well as heavy-duty industrial use.
Choose a worm gear hand winch when you need a robust construction, controlled operation or additional rope storage.
Hand winches for lifting and pulling
A hand winch can be used for more than simply raising a load. Common applications include:
- Lifting and lowering pumps, hatches, gates and machine components
- Pulling trolleys, doors, boats and movable constructions
- Positioning equipment during installation or maintenance
- Tensioning conveyor belts, nets, cables and other systems
- Operating equipment in locations without electricity
- Providing a mechanical back-up for a powered system
The winch, wire rope, mounting structure and accessories must always be selected as one complete system. A winch intended only for pulling must not automatically be used for lifting.
Capacities from 150 to 7,500 kg
Gebuwin hand winches are available for a wide range of load capacities.
Compact models are suitable for lighter work, limited installation space and portable applications. Medium-capacity winches are commonly integrated into machinery, production lines and industrial installations. Heavy-duty worm gear winches are designed for demanding applications such as gangways, pumps, large doors, valves and bulk-handling systems.
The stated capacity is only one part of the selection. Rope diameter, the number of rope layers on the drum, mounting position and required safety factor can also affect the usable capacity.
Stainless steel and marine hand winches
For outdoor, offshore, food-processing and other corrosive environments, Gebuwin offers stainless steel and marine versions.
Stainless steel models use corrosion-resistant materials for applications where moisture or aggressive conditions are present. Marine winches combine a robust construction with additional protection for exposed components.
The appropriate material and finish depend on the environment, maintenance interval and required service life. Contact Gebuwin if the winch will be exposed to salt water, chemicals or continuous outdoor use.
Safety and automatic braking
A brake is an essential part of a hand winch used for controlling a load. Gebuwin hand winches are equipped with a braking system suited to the design and intended application of the winch.
When the operator releases the crank, the brake helps keep the load in position. To lower the load, the operator turns the crank in the opposite direction in a controlled manner.
Safe operation also depends on correct installation, suitable wire rope, regular inspection and compliance with the instructions for the individual model. Never exceed the stated capacity and always check whether a winch is approved for lifting, pulling or both.
Read our technical explanation to learn how a hand winch brake works.
Options and custom configurations
Depending on the model, Gebuwin hand winches can be supplied with options such as:
- Grooved drums
- Multiple drum compartments
- Free-spooling drums
- Pressure rollers
- Stainless steel components
- Special coatings
- Alternative crank lengths
- Electric or pneumatic drive options for selected models
If a standard model does not fit the installation or application, Gebuwin can also assess a custom configuration.
Frequently asked questions
Can a hand winch be used for both lifting and pulling?
This depends on the individual model and its specifications. Select a winch that is explicitly suitable for the intended movement and load.
How much force is required to operate a hand winch?
The required crank force depends on the load, transmission, drum diameter, rope layer and crank length. Consult the technical specifications of the selected model.
How fast does a hand winch operate?
The speed varies by model and load. It is determined by factors including the transmission ratio, drum diameter and operating speed of the crank.
Which hand winch should I choose?
Start with the maximum load, lifting or pulling distance, required rope capacity, operating environment and frequency of use. The Gebuwin configurator can help narrow down the available models.
